SBA Express Loan: Limits, Rates and Terms (2026)

An SBA Express loan is a faster version of the SBA 7(a) loan: an approved lender uses its own forms and makes the credit decision itself, without SBA review, in exchange for a smaller SBA guaranty of 50%. Loans go up to $500,000, as a term loan or a revolving line of credit of up to 10 years. The business must meet the same SBA eligibility rules as any 7(a) loan: for-profit, U.S. based, small under SBA size standards, in an eligible industry, unable to get the credit on reasonable terms elsewhere, and able to repay. Rates are negotiated but capped by the SBA; for variable-rate loans the cap is the prime rate plus 3% to 6.5% depending on the loan size, which was 10% to 13.5% in September 2026.

Quick answer: SBA Express is a 7(a) delivery method for loans up to $500,000. The lender makes the credit decision without SBA review, the SBA guarantees 50% of the loan, collateral is not required up to $50,000, and lines of credit can run up to 10 years. Eligibility is the same as for any 7(a) loan, and variable rates are capped at 10% to 13.5% as of September 2026.

Part of our guide to SBA Loans: Which Program Fits Your Business?.

What is an SBA Express loan?

SBA Express is one of the ways a 7(a) loan can be made. The SBA gives approved Express lenders delegated authority to process, close, service and liquidate the loan without SBA review. In return, the SBA guarantees less of the loan: 50%, against up to 85% on a regular 7(a) loan of $150,000 or less and up to 75% above that. For you, the practical difference is that the lender's own process decides your application.

What is the maximum SBA Express loan amount?

The maximum SBA Express loan is $500,000. Loans above that go through the standard 7(a) program, which goes up to $5 million.

What is the minimum SBA Express loan amount?

The SBA does not publish a minimum SBA Express loan amount on its program pages. Individual lenders set their own. For $50,000 or less, the SBA microloan program is another option.

What is the maximum SBA Express loan term?

An Express line of credit can run up to 10 years. Express term loans follow the general 7(a) term rules: up to 10 years, unless they finance real estate or equipment with a useful life longer than 10 years, and up to 25 years for real estate, including extensions.

What interest rate do SBA Express loans charge?

Rates are negotiated with the lender but cannot exceed the SBA maximum. Express loans are 7(a) loans, and the SBA's maximum variable rates for 7(a) loans depend on the loan size. With prime at 7.00% in September 2026:

Loan amountSBA maximum variable rateAs of September 2026
$50,000 or lessPrime plus 6.5%13.5%
$50,001 to $250,000Prime plus 6.0%13.0%
$250,001 to $350,000Prime plus 4.5%11.5%
$350,001 to $500,000Prime plus 3.0%10.0%

The right-hand column moves when prime moves, and your lender can offer less than the cap.

Who qualifies for an SBA Express loan?

The same businesses that qualify for any 7(a) loan. A business must:

  • Be an operating business
  • Operate for profit
  • Be located in the U.S.
  • Be small under SBA size requirements
  • Not be a type of ineligible business
  • Not be able to get the desired credit on reasonable terms from non-government sources
  • Be creditworthy and show a reasonable ability to repay the loan

Since March 1, 2026, every owner of the business, direct or indirect, must also be a US citizen or US national whose principal residence is in the US. Lawful permanent residents (green card holders) can no longer own any share of an Express (7(a)) borrower.

Because the Express lender makes the credit decision with its own procedures, its own standards matter more here than on a standard 7(a) loan. The SBA does not publish a minimum credit score. Many SBA lenders look for a personal score of about 650 or higher, some from 620; that is typical lender practice, not an SBA rule.

Collateral. Lenders are not required to take collateral on Express loans of $50,000 or less. Above that, they may use their own collateral policy, but a loan is not to be declined only because collateral falls short.

What can SBA Express funds be used for?

The same uses as the 7(a) program, including:

  • Working capital, short and long term
  • Buying machinery and equipment
  • Buying, refinancing or improving real estate
  • Refinancing business debt
  • Changes of ownership
  • A revolving line of credit, which Express permits and a standard 7(a) term loan does not

How long does it take to get an SBA Express loan?

The SBA does not list a separate review time for Express loans, because the lender makes the credit decision itself without SBA review. How long it takes depends on that lender's own process and on how complete your application is. For how the SBA timelines compare, see SBA 7(a) Loan Processing Time: How Long It Really Takes.

What fees do SBA Express loans have?

Express loans carry the same SBA upfront guaranty fee as other 7(a) loans. The lender pays it and may pass it on to you. For loans approved from October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, with a term longer than 12 months, it is 2% of the guaranteed portion for loans of $150,000 or less and 3% for loans of $150,001 to $700,000. For loans of 12 months or less it is 0.25%.

Two exceptions help Express borrowers:

  • Veterans. For every SBA Express loan to a business owned and controlled by a veteran or a veteran's spouse, the upfront fee is $0.
  • Manufacturers, food supply chain and rural businesses. For loans of $700,000 or less to these businesses, the upfront fee is 0%.

As a worked example (derived): a $300,000 Express loan with a 50% guaranty has a $150,000 guaranteed portion, so a 3% fee is $4,500.

The lender also pays the SBA an annual service fee of 0.55% of the guaranteed balance and may not pass it on to you.

How much do business owners ask for?

In our study of more than 1,000 funding applications, just over half asked for $50,000 or less and roughly one in five asked for $100,000 or more, a range the $500,000 Express limit covers. The figures are self-reported by applicants and describe what they asked for, not what they were approved for. See the TopFunders Small Business Funding Study.

How to apply for an SBA Express loan

  1. Find a lender that offers SBA Express. Only lenders the SBA has approved for Express can make these loans. The SBA's Lender Match tool connects you with participating lenders.
  2. Confirm you meet the 7(a) eligibility rules above.
  3. Prepare the lender's application. Express lenders mostly use their own forms, plus SBA Form 1919, the borrower information form.
  4. The lender decides, closes and funds the loan without SBA review.

What if an SBA Express loan is not the right fit?

If you need more than $500,000, the standard 7(a) program goes up to $5 million. For buildings or long-life equipment, a 504 loan may cost less. If you need money within days, online lenders usually move faster and cost more; see What Business Financing Costs before you compare, and use our Business Loan Calculator: Monthly Payments and How Much You Can Borrow to see what your cash flow supports.

The maximum is $500,000. Larger loans go through the standard 7(a) program, which goes up to $5 million.

Does TopFunders.ai make SBA Express loans?

No. TopFunders.ai is not a lender and not an SBA lender. It introduces business owners to funding partners, and each partner makes its own decision.

The bottom line

SBA Express trades a smaller SBA guaranty for a simpler process: the lender decides, and the loan can be a line of credit. For amounts up to $500,000 it is the quickest way to SBA-backed rates, but the lender's own standards decide your application. Ask any Express lender for the rate, the upfront fee and the total cost in writing before you sign.
